Bettye La Vette performs her own rendition of Christine's song "Old" at the Cafe Carlyle NYC

Invited as a guest to see the one and only Miss Bettye La Vette, I was honored to hear her perform her wonderful rendition of my song "Old" in her heart wrenching 90 minutes set. According to the NY Times in March 2012 Review  "Ms. LaVette is quick to note that she spent 45 years in relative obscurity before she was rediscovered several years ago. Now recognized as one of the great soul interpreters of her generation, she has a gift that, in my opinion, makes her the equal of Aretha Franklin and Tina Turner. And Ms. LaVette is savoring what was long denied her. Instead of a diva making grand gestures, she is an R&B realist who tells it like it is."

CHRISTINE SANTELLI/Dragonfly:  Veteran singer/songwriter comes in self releasing her eighth album, a set that would have been at home on a first tier folk label like Waterbug (high praise indeed).  Solid, straight from the heart and mind songs that leave an impact and create vivid impressions, this lo-fi set has what it takes to live forever on satellite radio loft stations and always be welcome. Solid throughout.

Christine Santelli Flies Completely Solo

In the mid-1990s New Yorker Christine Santelli began touring the world as one of blues’/roots rock’s brightest new stars; sharing stages and concert bills with such respected veterans as Kim Wilson, Eric Burdon, Bonnie Raitt and Steve Cropper.  Her ongoing career has been full of critical accolades, loyal fans and as her latest album demonstrates…artistic growth.

Santelli’s musical style and perhaps more importantly her songwriting have come a long way since her earlier “blues” days.  Years spent on the road and the everyday life experiences that many of us take for granted, have since fueled her music with maturity and depth.

In 2010 she bravely put her writing chops to the test, committing herself to an ambitious project that would ultimately find her writing, performing and posting (on youtube & Facebook) 100 original songs in 100 consecutive days and in late 2011, after honing what she considered to be the cream of that 100 song crop, Santelli entered the studio to do something that she had never done before; record an intimate solo acoustic album.

Produced by Dave Gross, DRAGONFLY finds the powerful female vocalist hiding behind nothing but her acoustic guitar…or in some instances her piano.  Over the span of just 15 short tracks Santelli paints a dynamic portrait that is so beautifully vulnerable and feminine, that it could have only come from a woman (not a girl) that has been diligently refining her craft for years.

DRAGONFLY delivers the mellow vibe that most would expect from an album made up entirely of one voice and instrument, but its emotional range is wide and its musical tones are varied.  Many of its tracks have a subtle country “feel,” while others take their cues from some of popular music’s singer/songwriter greats—“Why Call Me” would undoubtedly feel at home on an album like Billy Joel’s COLD SPRING HARBOR and “Your Name’s Now Up In Lights” contains shades of Sting’s hit album TEN SUMMONER’S TALES.

From the beautifully melancholy “Ten Years Ago” to the wonderfully fun “Lazy,” DRAGONFLY spans the tonal spectrum and on the whole explores the many facets of love; the joy of it as well as the pain and the love that one has for their significant other, their family, their home and themselves.  It’s a mature work from a gifted singer/songwriter and it is definitely worth a listen.

A Worthy Artist Needs Your Help!

Anyone who has taken a look at our Contents page in the past few months knows Christine Santelli as one of our favorite artists--each month we feature a new video from her 100 Songs in 100 Days project and do what we can to keep her name and her music in our news. Recently Ms. Santelli sent a note to her mailing list announcing a 30-day Kickstarter campaign to raise funds to complete her first solo acoustic album, which she hopes to self release in 2012. We’re hoping to mobilize our readers to pitch in any little bit of spare change to aid her cause. Her most recent, critically lauded albums, 2006’s Tales From the Red Room and 2009’s Any Better Time, showed substantial growth in all aspects of her artistry, but notably in the maturity of her songwriting. Though categorized as a blues artist, Ms. Santelli has in the past couple of years evolved into a blues-influenced singer-songwriter of uncommon depth. We’ve heard several of the songs in rough mix form and in person at her weekly solo acoustic appearances as the host of the Path Café’s Wednesday night singer-songwriter open mic, and can assure all who contribute to the Kickstarter fund of making a good investment. New songs such as “Why Call Me,” “Ten Years Ago” and “Rita” are absolute gems of grown-up musings on missed opportunities, faded love and intense yearning. And those are only three of 15 new tunes ready to go, expertly steered by ace guitarist/producer Dave Gross. Please join in pitching in to make Christine Santelli’s new album a reality. At latest report, she had collected 1/3 of her stated goal. Every little bit helps. The campaign, which began on October 20, runs until November 17. If her money goal is not met within 30 days, contributors will not be charged. Thanks for any and all help for a worthy artistic endeavor.

A songwriter during the brill building days signed a songwriting contract with Hill & Range music early in his career, and later co-wrote Bad Reputation (Joan Jett and the Blackhearts) just one of the many songs written by this amazing artist..

Gene D. Plumber: Hoboken LEGEND Gene Turonis delights audiences with his eclectic collection of folk, country and Tin Pan Alley tunes, his tasty finger pickin’ guitar style, homespun vocals and whistling expertise. Gene coined the phrase “Tex-Mex-abilly” to describe his unique sound. New album coming soon.

Johnny Markowski, an accomplished drummer, can be found playing his kit these days with The New Riders of the Purple Sage. When not on the road with The NRPS, Johnny works with his band, Stir Fried, and plays with various artists in many styles. Songwriting is also in his blood. Markowski’s band, Stir Fried, known for its blend of swamp groove, psychedelic improvisational music performs signature versions of Kaye masterpieces in addition to Markowski originals. The group has recorded and performed with the likes of Dr. John, Vassar Clements (Old & In The Way), Commander Cody, Buddy Cage (NRPS), Jo Jo Herman (Widespread Panic), Bernie Worrell (P Funk, Talking Heads), Derek Trucks (Allman Bros. Band) and Tony Trischka. Recently held a contest for the most impressive drummer/percussionist, and after two weeks of voting Markowskiwon hands down, beating out some pretty heavy competition

Christine Santelli Grammy Nominated Songwriter, Christine Santelli has been on the NYC music scene for more than 2 decades. She has toured around the world and has released 9 CD’s over her career. Her Songwriting has caught the attention of Soul R&B singer Bettye LaVette, who has recorded two of Santelli’s songs on her last two albums “Step Away” on 2015 release “Worthy” and “Old” 2013 release “More Thankful More Thoughtful. Santelli’s most recent EP, “Limelight ‘69”was chosen 2013 EP of the Year by Deep Roots Magazine. “ The beauty of Limelight ’69 is that you don’t have to buy any of your faithful friend and narrator’s cockamamie ideas about its narrative arc but can rather enjoy the tunes here as unconnected short stories—literate, engaging, darkly humorous in spots, certainly unabashedly romantic by the time the curtain comes down—and appreciate a fine songwriter at the top of her game.” Deep Roots Magazine
