Invited as a guest to see the one and only Miss Bettye La Vette, I was honored to hear her perform her wonderful rendition of my song "Old" in her heart wrenching 90 minutes set. According to the NY Times in March 2012 Review "Ms. LaVette is quick to note that she spent 45 years in relative obscurity before she was rediscovered several years ago. Now recognized as one of the great soul interpreters of her generation, she has a gift that, in my opinion, makes her the equal of Aretha Franklin and Tina Turner. And Ms. LaVette is savoring what was long denied her. Instead of a diva making grand gestures, she is an R&B realist who tells it like it is."

Christine Santelli Flies Completely Solo

In the mid-1990s New Yorker Christine Santelli began touring the world as one of blues’/roots rock’s brightest new stars; sharing stages and concert bills with such respected veterans as Kim Wilson, Eric Burdon, Bonnie Raitt and Steve Cropper. Her ongoing career has been full of critical accolades, loyal fans and as her latest album demonstrates…artistic growth.

Santelli’s musical style and perhaps more importantly her songwriting have come a long way since her earlier “blues” days. Years spent on the road and the everyday life experiences that many of us take for granted, have since fueled her music with maturity and depth.

In 2010 she bravely put her writing chops to the test, committing herself to an ambitious project that would ultimately find her writing, performing and posting (on youtube & Facebook) 100 original songs in 100 consecutive days and in late 2011, after honing what she considered to be the cream of that 100 song crop, Santelli entered the studio to do something that she had never done before; record an intimate solo acoustic album.

Produced by Dave Gross, DRAGONFLY finds the powerful female vocalist hiding behind nothing but her acoustic guitar…or in some instances her piano. Over the span of just 15 short tracks Santelli paints a dynamic portrait that is so beautifully vulnerable and feminine, that it could have only come from a woman (not a girl) that has been diligently refining her craft for years.

DRAGONFLY delivers the mellow vibe that most would expect from an album made up entirely of one voice and instrument, but its emotional range is wide and its musical tones are varied. Many of its tracks have a subtle country “feel,” while others take their cues from some of popular music’s singer/songwriter greats—“Why Call Me” would undoubtedly feel at home on an album like Billy Joel’s COLD SPRING HARBOR and “Your Name’s Now Up In Lights” contains shades of Sting’s hit album TEN SUMMONER’S TALES.

From the beautifully melancholy “Ten Years Ago” to the wonderfully fun “Lazy,” DRAGONFLY spans the tonal spectrum and on the whole explores the many facets of love; the joy of it as well as the pain and the love that one has for their significant other, their family, their home and themselves. It’s a mature work from a gifted singer/songwriter and it is definitely worth a listen.

A Worthy Artist Needs Your Help!

Anyone who has taken a look at our Contents page in the past few months knows Christine Santelli as one of our favorite artists--each month we feature a new video from her 100 Songs in 100 Days project and do what we can to keep her name and her music in our news. Recently Ms. Santelli sent a note to her mailing list announcing a 30-day Kickstarter campaign to raise funds to complete her first solo acoustic album, which she hopes to self release in 2012. We’re hoping to mobilize our readers to pitch in any little bit of spare change to aid her cause. Her most recent, critically lauded albums, 2006’s Tales From the Red Room and 2009’s Any Better Time, showed substantial growth in all aspects of her artistry, but notably in the maturity of her songwriting. Though categorized as a blues artist, Ms. Santelli has in the past couple of years evolved into a blues-influenced singer-songwriter of uncommon depth. We’ve heard several of the songs in rough mix form and in person at her weekly solo acoustic appearances as the host of the Path Café’s Wednesday night singer-songwriter open mic, and can assure all who contribute to the Kickstarter fund of making a good investment. On her seventh Album, this New Yorker successfully expands her personal vision of the blues with several strains of country music, including Cajun. The grain in Santelli's voice lends her singing an edge of earnestness that fits the appealing tunes she wrote about giving in to despair ("Down in the Valley") and juping off the "fast track" (Lily's Song"). Not a blustery guitarist herself, Santelli calls on Popa Chubby to incinerate the blues-rock breakout "Ode to Bill." Her ambitious "For You" matches the song character's emotional health to surprise giddy cirucus music.
